2013 Tour Dates
The term “all-star” too often implies competition. While it may be a desirable element of sporting events, I’ve been to concerts where musicians overindulging in it produced wearying results.
Friday night’s Hult Center audience heard performances by the six Monterey Jazz Festival 55th anniversary tour “all-stars” who were competitive in stature, heavy-hitting in their potency and yet approachably musical.
Each of these established artists has an impressive resume and could dominate the stage individually, but the spirit of the evening was about genuine collaboration and relishing the fun afforded by the wide range of selections.
An opening comedic exchange of flirtations between singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and musical director and bassist Christian McBride set the tone for the evening, which would have been a good introduction to the essence of jazz for someone unfamiliar with the art.
